Impressions: Oxide 2x by Kim Hyung-Tae is a visual feast for the Eyes! The images look so good; they stir up the appetite for more. The artwork is some of the best in the illustration game! Kim has been busy recently doing character illustrations for games. Just some of his credits include: War on Genesis, Magna Carta and the Street Fighter series. His style has a very unique feel to it. Every image blasts out bright beautiful warm colours which gives the impression of not only depth, but life to each illustration. His clothing designs are completely original as well. But most importantly his style gives off a certain sexual flavor which is hidden very well, yet detectable however subtle it may be. Kim’s characters look like your typical anime art style, yet seem more refined and experienced with the great lighting and shadows. They are basically sexed up, fleshed out, super deformed Japanese anime characters. It is a refreshing take on this style because it feels so far away from a cute art style, that it borders on the naughty. The book chronicles Kim Hyung-Tae’s work from 1999 through 2004. This was when he was working on The War of Genesis III and Magna Carta. Although the art book is Japanese, all the illustration information is in English. I lucked out there! The only beef I have with this art book is that it is too short. I am still left hungry for more of Kim’s work. He truly is a genius and I think we will see a lot of him in the near future.
